This microscope came out of a house in Arlington MA. While it is unsigned, some of its unique design features clearly indicate it was made by the same manufacturer that made another microscope bearing the signature George L. Gowlland, Cambridge Mass., No. 117. Little is known about this manufacturer who produced these rather oddly styled and constructed microscopes. Even the optics are unconventional; the eyepiece is composed of three lenses, which result in a rather narrow field of view.

In the 1896 Cambridge (Massachusetts) Directory, there is a listing for "Gowlland George, instrument maker, rms. 37 Erie".
